Character Name: Leonardo “Leo” Bistario Harwey
Species: Human ( Hacker / Master )
Canon: Fate/EXTRA series
Canon Point: Post-Fate/EXTRA CCC
Character Age: 20
CRAU: No
Character Appearance: Here.

Powers and Abilities:

A Master is a mage who has formed a contract with a Heroic Spirit, which is a more powerful, fantastical version ghost of a famous figure of history or myth (i.e. King Arthur, Francis Drake, Gilgamesh). Once the contract is formed, the Mage is thus dubbed a ‘Master’ and a Heroic Spirit is dubbed their ‘Servant’.

In other words, a Master is essentially a summoner that performs a ritual to conjure a powerful familiar and make a deal usually having an end goal in mind.

What is also unique to a Master is that they typically have a red tattoo on the back of their hand after the contract with the Spirit is finalized. These red tattoos are called “Command Seals” which are basically strong bursts of magic that can either empower a Servant, or force the Servant to obey a command if they refuse. Leo will only have THREE Command Seals to use if he somehow manages to form a contract with one Servant or more (note this only applies to FATE Servants, he won’t get these seals if he somehow makes a contract with a non-Fate familiar).

In Fate’s universe, Magus Society values bloodlines and lineage therefore social class and status is dependent on how strong their capacity for magecraft is. It is such a big deal, families would even go as far as any means necessary to enhance their bloodlines and produce stronger heirs.

Leo comes from a powerful and noble lineage of magi (to put their strength into perspective, the Harwey family owns 60% of the world and controls all their resources in Fate/Extra), therefore is naturally gifted with strong “magical circuits” (look to next section). With plentiful resources, Leo had rigorous training and education on magecraft. As mentioned, noble families will go further to strengthen their bloodline: since the age of 3, Leo underwent multiple surgeries to further enhance his already strong circuits.

Another way of looking at this: think of other works of fiction where there's a plot about enhancing the genetics of a specimen with great potential. That specimen is experimented on and has their body modified to achieve that greatest potential and more. That is what was done to Leo and it paid off. In comparison to his mage peers on the Moon, Leo’s statistics outranks them all in every way possible. In JRPG terms, he is maxed out in every stat important for your magic user character.

Magical circuits in Fate’s universe are basically spiritual nerves that distribute magical energy within a mage’s body (like the nervous system which transmits signals back and forth between the brain and the body to regulate physical bodily functions, but for magic).

Magic circuits are responsible for converting life force into magical energy. Being able to tap into one’s magic circuits by will is foundational when it comes to conducting magic and rituals.

The number of magic circuits are determined at birth. The more good quality circuits a body has, the stronger the magic conducted will be. This is why it is deemed desirable for mage families to alter their genetics and bodies to produce heirs with more circuits. This is also why surgeries were conducted on Leo from a very young age: to give him even more circuits to convert life force into stronger, more effective magical energy.

External Codecasts are magical consumable items in Fate/Extra’s world, in which the main setting is in digital space. In JRPG terms, think of External Codecasts as consumable items that are buffs, and various other effects depending on the item. They take on many forms such as potions and food. ‘External Codecast’ is just an in-universe unique way of saying ‘consumable item’.

For the purpose of this game, these do not apply that much given the equivalent of External Codecasts outside of a magic-digital setting would be just magic potions, medicines, etc. Leo has nothing specific as he is not the player character (the series does not specify if he does have unique consumable items) but it is implied he uses them due to the nature of the setting as that is how mages in that space get boosts in power, health, sustenance, etc.

Internal Codecasts are essentially equippable gear. Think special pants, armor, etc. that grants the wearer special spells. Mages in Fate/EXTRA’s setting, based on the player character, only can have TWO Internal Codecasts.

Another way of looking at this term is if you wield a special accessory or special cloak that grants you specific abilities and skills as long as you are wearing them.

What does Leo have access to specifically?

Sword Camelot: Castle of the assembled brilliant Holy Sword - His personal skill unique to him.
Using this skill allows him to create a big wall of fire and he can only use it for 3 minutes. This is mainly used to repel threats as a means of defense, or to keep out unwanted interruptions. A scenario that involves an unwarranted interruption, as an example, is if Leo is having a one-on-one duel with an opponent and there are others witnessing this duel who are capable to disrupt the duel or gang up on him. The wall of fire repels and keeps up this magic barrier for, again, 3 minutes.
It is a skill that is passed down in the Harwey Family.
For the purpose of this game, he can only use this once every 24 hours.

Stun Bomb: bomb(32)
Self explanatory by name, a stun bomb is a spell that he can unleash on his enemies, that explodes with the purpose of stunning them with the impact. The enemy can only be stunned for a short period of time, so it wears off.
It comes in the form of his gloves.
He can only use this three times every 24 hours.

Vanish: vanish_add(a);
A spell that removes, or cleanses buffs off of enemies. If an enemy he is facing casts or uses a skill to strengthen themselves (attack power, defense power, etc.), Vanish removes these effects.
Comes in a cloth called “Maleficent Garments”.
He too can only use this three times every 24 hours.

Magecraft

Outside of Fate/EXTRA’s setting, Leo is a mage. Fate/EXTRA is set in a digital world, therefore much of his magecraft abides by the functions and codes of that digital world. Outside of that world, as Leo had a life before entering the universe’s main setting on Earth, meaning he is capable of conducting magic and spells.

With this in mind, “External Codecasts” do not apply outside of EXTRA’s setting, so he will be regulated to purchasing Visium’s own items.
While he is normally a Hacker within Fate/EXTRA’s setting, that too does not apply for the setting of this game as there is very limited technology and therefore no use for this kind of magecraft (as it is designed for EXTRA’s universe). However, he is capable of traditional magecraft and casting spells.

For example, if he buys a spell book within Visium’s setting. He is able to study and cast spells because the magical circuits he possesses are very much part of his biology and genetics.

Based on the definition of “Magical Circuits” above, there naturally will be limitations as to how many times he can cast spells given it’s about converting lifeforce into magical energy, or basically mana. He will get exhausted if casts spells constantly and will need to rest.

What Did Your Character Wish For? A second chance at becoming the ‘King’ he was destined to be. More precisely, to become someone truly worthy of saving and leading humanity into true prosperity after learning hard lessons in his previous life.
What Potion Did They Receive? The Gold Potion.
Did They Drink It? Yes.
If Yes, What Element/Animal? A lion! ‘Leo’, ‘lion’, not very creative, but he loves the idea.

Character Questions:

1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?

Leo is most bonded with his Servant, Gawain of the Knights of the Roundtable. They have a relationship most similar to a king and their loyal knight, the latter honoring their duty and service to their said liege. Together, they are a powerful pair being the strongest Master-Servant duo in their canon. Gawain loyally stood by his Master’s side despite that Leo himself had room to learn; this is in spite of the fact that Gawain never pointed out said flaws. By the end of the story, Gawain had come to be proud of Leo’s development and how he himself recognized that even he had flaws. Of course, there is a lighter hearted side to them with their sillier big brother-little brother dynamic.

2. What are they most afraid of and why?

Given his destiny to be a ‘savior king’ of sorts for humanity, Leo has little to no concept of fear. That is until he learned the fear of failure. To further elaborate on this, Leo is unable to imagine the possibility of defeat especially when he was raised to be humanity’s last hope for survival. This is because up until a certain point in his arc, Leo never once failed, not even defeated in combat. He had a reputation of being the strongest Master on the Moon Cell and for a reason given his exceptional prowess. However, he learns in his experiences within the Moon Cell, that such a mindset is distorted and unhealthy for a human. After his first real defeat, for once Leo felt despair and thus one could say he is most afraid of failure.

3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?

In spite of his sincere desire to provide humanity with certain stability and safety, Leo lacks the understanding of what it means for humanity to feel negative emotions such as weakness, failure, and fear. While it may be advantageous to go about the flow of things, it is a grave emotional and mental weakness for Leo to continue on like this as it leads to no progress. This is most glaring when it comes to his philosophy of ensuring equality and safety for humanity and its many generations to come. While it is grand to have a future that is both equal and stable, Leo’s beliefs and methodologies bring more harm than good as he risks bringing stagnation and deprivation of free will as a means to an end.

As for physical weaknesses, Leo is human through and through regardless of how powerful he is as a mage and wizard hacker. Without Gawain, Leo is more susceptible to bodily harms and risks than most humans are. There are no outstanding conditions such as significant poor immune systems or disabilities.

4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?

A big thing is that Leo presents himself as empathetic when in reality he isn’t. Outwardly, he presents himself as warm, charismatic, and approachable to most of his peers. He would have a way of words, a breadth of fresh air that is comforting and alluring. However, on the inside, he doesn’t exactly understand the feelings of the underprivileged; this includes the human emotion felt when one experiences defeat, loss or fear. Rarely has Leo challenged himself to put himself in the shoes of others that well, and lacks that self awareness to do so.

An example of this is when he attempts to comfort the player character, Hakuno Kishinami, after they defeat another Master and Servant. The defeated pair lost their lives (as with the way the system is set up, if you lose, you die). Hakuno feels the weight of their guilt and sorrow over taking life on their shoulders.

Leo appears to them after this, and Hakuno’s narrating describes his voice as “warm, caring” and that his voice “breaks through my gloom.” While he is attempting to comfort her, Hakuno notices something in what he says: “The loss of life is a sad affair. Especially if it’s a consequence of the ruthlessness of war.”

Hakuno notes this, and as Leo continues to speak, his words specifically become less and less comforting. The player character describes Leo’s speech accordingly: “Though his ideas are poisonous, there is a seductiveness to his words that is hard to ignore.”

Leo has a savior complex. He thinks what he does is for the greater good of humanity regardless of how “poisonous” his ideologies can be. However, he lacks the empathy and understanding of people’s struggles either due to his inability to connect or due to how he is raised to believe he is the savior king of humanity. He feels he is always correct, when in reality, his outlook and plans in saving humanity would be considered wrong and unjust by the protagonists (i.e. a character in the story argues Leo's rule would in reality strip people's free will and emotions all to make them "equal" and "safe" ).

5. What would make them happiest and why?

Leo did not have a real childhood growing up, so he is at his happiest whenever he gets to experience life as a normal person and be just “Leo”. That is why he can sometimes be a little childish and more free spirited, participate in playful banters and loosen up a little.

6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?

Leo’s ideal significant other or partner, he thinks initially, would be someone who sees eye to eye with him and would serve better as an extendable limb of his if anything. Leo’s priority is to preserve and protect humanity after all, so he would most desire a partner who shares similar goals and similar capacity to get things done.

But again, this is what he initially believes. A real ideal partner would be someone who isn’t an extra strong limb to be attached to him, but rather another whole. A foil who could challenge Leo and thus make him see his weaknesses and inspire him to do better.

7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?

Ultimately yes, he would make a sacrifice to save someone else. That act for Leo alone is momentous because of his mission in life to become the savior of humanity. One would think with that in mind, he would prioritize himself above others so that he may save humanity as a whole, but there is someone in his canon who earned his deepest trust to make a sacrifice for them.

That someone is Hakuno Kishinami, who throughout a series of events has challenged his worldviews and, once more, earned his deepest trust. Canonically, Leo had given up his life for Hakuno for the sake of clearing a path for their victory.

He wholeheartedly learned to believe in Hakuno’s potential and most importantly, their will to live (Hakuno represents progress versus Leo who is stagnation). Leo is drawn to Hakuno’s pure innocent nature and also knows that Hakuno possesses the answer that Leo “lacks”. No matter how much Hakuno is trampled upon, no matter how much they get hurt, Hakuno always stands back up. A heart that never gives up, that proud way of life that Hakuno lives, is what Leo lacks, and that is something Leo is willing to sacrifice himself for.

8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?

They would want their older self to remember the lessons he learned: more specifically, he would want his older self to remember there are many ways to ensure humanity’s safety and continuation. There is no sole ruler, no sole solution. To be a just “King”, he must come to accept and understand that in order for humanity to truly live and continue, they must take risks and push themselves towards something better than to be led by the single hand and single mind of one “King”.

There is hope for the future. Hope for humanity to lead itself to a better future someday.

9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?

If Leo had Gawain, undoubtedly he would fight. But that isn’t the case here. Therefore, Leo will most certainly fawn to attempt in overcoming strenuous circumstances. He does have an unnatural charisma to him that has had the attention and sway of his audience. With this in mind, Leo will use his wits and diplomacy to talk his way out of things or to make deals and settlements.

10. Why did your character make the wish they did?

If a Master is defeated within the Moon Cell Holy Grail war, they automatically die. While Leo is not afraid of death per se, what is significant about his defeat is that it is the first time he has been defeated and his world view is shaken. This is both despair inducing, but also a wake up call and a real challenge to his beliefs and mindset. With that, Leo makes his wish so that he can continue to grow as a person and as the King he was destined to be. There is still much to learn, much to understand, and therefore this is a second chance at not only living life, but also to truly become someone worthy of saving humanity.
